Eighty-six-year-old Shirley Underwood surveys her farmland in Hodgenville, Kentucky. Underwood expressed her grief and disapproval of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s plans to enforce eminent domain for the second time on her property to complete a road construction project that would add a passing lane on Highway 210 in LaRue County. Underwood claims that when KYTC took 10 acres of her road frontage to widen Highway 210 during the 1990s, their construction caused deep gullies to form in her yard and in her fields from the water that now runs from the neighbors’ land across the road down to the creek on her farm. “It’s so sad to see the land destroyed. The excess water causes the creek to flood repeatedly, making the bridge my late husband built to access our land wash away. I hate to think about what new damage the highway department will cause next when they do more construction,” said Underwood. KYTC plans to begin construction on the Hwy 210 project in 2025.

Pier 39 in San Francisco is famous for many reasons. For couples, it is a place to prove their affection by inscribing their initials or names on love locks they place on the chainlink fence overlooking the bay. For California sea lions, Pier 39 is a refuge from predators and offers a well-supplied feeding ground during the late spring.
